What is Entra ID?

Entra ID (formerly Azure Active Directory or Azure AD) is Microsoft’s cloud-based identity and access management service, designed to provide secure authentication and authorization for users, applications, and devices within Microsoft 365 and other integrated services.

It is part of the Microsoft Entra product family, which focuses on identity security and access governance.

Entra ID enables organizations to manage user identities, enforce security policies, and facilitate secure access to on-premises and cloud-based resources. Key features include single sign-on (SSO), multifactor authentication (MFA), conditional access policies, and integration with Microsoft security solutions and third-party applications.

For example:

  • Single sign-on: Users can access Microsoft 365 applications, such as Teams and SharePoint, along with other business apps, using one set of credentials.
  • Conditional access: Organizations can enforce policies like granting access only to users on compliant devices or from specific geographic locations.

Entra ID is central to modern Zero Trust security and governance strategies. It gives organizations the ability to continuously verify the identity of a user and ensure secure access across all environments. It is essential for hybrid work scenarios and supports identity protection, governance, and compliance for businesses and organizations of all sizes.
